They wanted to get to Europe from the North African coast. In 2014 3,500 people drowned attempting the same journey. In one incident in April 2015 more than 800 people lost their lives. In 2016 the death toll has climbed at an even faster rate than over the same period in 2015. So far crossings of Mediterranean Sea exceed 300,000 people, including 200,000 to Greece, most of them from countries affected by violence and conflict, such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
